Game Drive ins Rwanda
Game drive in Rwanda are mainly done in Akagera National Park with its vast savannah grasslands and plains, broad-leaved forests, steep hills, lakes and swamps that are teeming with a variety of animal and bird species. With the reintroduction of Eastern Black Rhinos and African Lions, the park is now home to all of Africa’s Big 5’ – Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo. The park also supports Giraffes, Zebras, and several species of Antelope like Oribi, Waterbuck, Topi, Eland, Reedbuck, Duiker and Sitatunga. Large predators include lions, leopards, The park is also home to primates such as Olive Baboons, Vervet Monkeys and the Nocturnal and wide-eyed Bush Babies.
Animals can be seen in Akagera National Park on a Day Game Drive, A Night Game Drive or a Boat Cruise on Lake Ihema
Lion
The Lions that used to live in Akagera National Park were all killed during the genocide and civil war between 1993 and 1994. As Refugees settled the predators were poisoned to protect livestock. In 2010 the Rwandan Government asked African Parks to assist with trying to locate Lions which could be reintroduced into the Park. The search went on for two years and included the following countries, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Zambia. Eventually, South Africa agreed to help.
Phinda Game Reserve and Tembe Elephant Park helped provide the Lions that were to be relocated to Akagera National Park in 2015, with anTwo additional males were translocated to the park in 2017 to increase genetic diversity and the park’s lion population has since tripled in size.
